Peek at the Strategy Behind the Viral Jumbo in Yogyakarta Station

30 September 2025

Jumbo in Yogyakarta Station proves the power of creative advertising. City Vision can help your brand stand out in premium transit spaces.

Train stations in Indonesia continue to transform into modern public spaces that not only function as transit points but also as strategic stages for visual interaction. One of the most attention-grabbing examples is the installation of the giant Jumbo balloon in Yogyakarta Station.

This giant installation is not just decoration, but a creative communication strategy that draws the attention of thousands of passengers every day, especially during holidays when passenger traffic surges. For brands that want to stand out, moments like this are golden opportunities to appear different and more memorable.

Every day thousands of people arrive at Tugu Yogyakarta Station, the main gateway to Malioboro and other tourist destinations. Reported by Tempo.co, in mid-2025, passengers exiting the east gate of the station were greeted by a giant balloon shaped like “Don,” the main character of the animated movie Jumbo.

As soon as they stepped off the platform or entered the station area, passengers were met with a unique sight rarely found in other stations. The Jumbo installation stood tall at the east gate of Yogyakarta Station, capturing the attention of every eye passing by. Its location near the road to Malioboro made its presence impossible to ignore.

This installation was a collaboration between PT KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta, Visinema, and EKRAF, and was displayed from June 18 to 30, 2025, right during the school holiday season. For many, Jumbo was not just an advertisement but a warm welcome that made their trip to Jogja more memorable from the very first step. It became part of the tourist story, adding color to what is usually seen as an ordinary transit experience.

According to Tempo.co, as stated by Daop 6 Yogyakarta’s Public Relations Manager Feni Novida Saragih, this installation was deliberately presented as visual entertainment, especially for children on their school holidays. The character “Don” from the Jumbo animated movie, popular among families, appeared in the form of a 15-meter-tall and 6-meter-wide balloon. It became both a visual attraction and a favorite photo spot for visitors.

More than decoration, the presence of Jumbo was an effort to make the station a family-friendly place, bringing warmth, laughter, and joy. This way, travel became not only about departure and arrival but also about emotional experiences that stuck in the hearts of every passenger.

Proof That Stations Can Be a Creative Stage for Brands

Train stations, especially Tugu Station, are not only transit points but also cultural gateways that connect tourists with Jogja’s unique lifestyle. Thousands of passengers pass through daily, many with phones ready to capture moments. This is where a huge opportunity lies for brands to appear, making the station a creative stage that is not just seen but remembered.

Creative installations like Jumbo prove that OOH advertising in Yogyakarta Station can do more than catch the eye. Audiences are encouraged to interact, take photos, and share their experiences on social media. This digital effect multiplies reach, spreading brand messages wider and more organically. Something static billboards cannot achieve.

For brands, being present in the station means entering a high-traffic area as well as a space of intense social interaction. Iconic installations can become new landmarks, building emotional connections and turning ads into part of the daily stories of thousands of people.

City Vision understands this dynamic by bringing exclusive, premium OOH formats that are unskippable and powerful. Just like the Jumbo balloon that became the center of attention, your ads can also become new visual landmarks dominating Tugu Station.

City Vision understands that modern outdoor advertising cannot stop at static billboards. Visioners surely agree that ads placed without creativity are quickly forgotten. That is why City Vision takes a different approach by turning billboards into living creative installations.

Some approaches developed include:

  • Giant animated balloons that grab attention from afar.

  • 3D statues or interactive art walls that invite audiences to take photos.

  • Creative visuals that combine art and technology to make brands more relevant to modern lifestyles, such as train livery.

With this strategy, ads are no longer just “seen” but truly experienced as part of the journey. The Jumbo installation in Yogyakarta Station is proof of how a brand message can transform into an iconic moment.

In addition to the giant balloon installation, another real example of a successful Jumbo OOH campaign was the Jumbo livery on trains. The Jumbo livery appeared on two special trains, KA Argo Bromo Anggrek (Gambir–Surabaya Pasarturi roundtrip) and KA Argo Dwipangga (Gambir–Solo Balapan roundtrip), as part of National Children’s Day celebrations.

This collaboration between KAI, EKRAF, and the Jumbo movie brought a more cheerful, family-friendly, and educational travel experience.
